Flying Dutchman Takes Out Mulligans

Only four players took part in today’s mulligan competition. Mulligan speciialist Dick Secomb was unavailable as he was selflessly doing volunteer work for the club.

This left the opportunity for others and Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen prevailed after an epic battle with Andrew Hall. On the final tee both Eddie & Andrew were level with 16 points while David “Jack” Webster & Dick Cleland were almost out of contention on 14. Eddie scored a steady 2 points to finish with 18 while Andrew missed a short put to finish on 17. Jack & Dick failed to add to their scores with Dick taking the Mars Bar on a count back. Dick was nearest the pin on hole 8 & Jack was nearest the pin on hole 11.

Mark “Mouldy” Millward appeared to take no notice of the warm weather & high winds registering a stableford score of 44 points on Saturday.  Runner up was junior member Kobi Wenzel with 36, a reasonable effort in the conditions. The remaining players clearly had difficulty as next best was David “Jack” Webster with 28 followed by Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel & Michael “Tickers” Tickner on 27. The Mars Bar went to Klaus Heymann from Tarcowie Golf Club with 26.

Thomo Takes Out Jennison Cup

Colourful local sporting identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson defeated Chris “Critta” Waters in the final of the Jennison Handicap Match Play Cup in testing conditions. The warm and windy conditions made golf  very difficult & Thomo’s experience saw him handle the conditions better than his opponent. Critta got away to a good start winning the first two holes, but Thomo steadied at this point and helped by a couple of errors from Critta reversed the score by half way. Critta was unable to get back into the game on the back 9 & Thomo eventually took the match 4 & 3.

The mulligan group has adopted the World  handicapping system which will be introduced in 2020, and all players gave it the thumbs up. The major changes are the adjustment of daily handicaps to account for the difference between the course scratch rating & par & the increase in the maximum handicap to 54.

Andrew Hall scored 22 points to beat Dick Cleland 21 points. Andrew needed to score 3 points on the last hole to pull clear. Mulligan specialist Dick Secomb was third with a disappointing 14 points while Trevor Maxted took the Mars Bar with 12.

Popular men’s vice captain, Mark “Mouldy” Millward won the 2018 Heritage Classic with 40 stableford points. Mouldy looked set for a score in the mid 40’s but looked a bit shaky on holes 16 & 17 before steadying himself on the final hole. Runner up was leading female Reva Cullen with 39 points. Bob Perry was third on a count back from Andy Spackman & Neville Kelly (Renmark) all finishing on 38. Danish visitor Paul Smedley was given a provisional handicap of 24 & finished with 43 points. Unfortunately Paul was ineligible for the main prize as his handicap was not official, but a great effort nonetheless. We all look forward to playing with Paul over the coming weeks as he has an extended stay in Burra.
