Jack Webster in Top Form

David "Jack" Webster

David “Jack” Webster took today’s field apart and issued a warning that he should not be ignored as the Club Championship qualifying draws to a close on Saturday.

In conditions that were dry and relatively calm but very cold Jack scored an outstanding 41 stableford points to win by 6 points. Runner up was David “Robbie” Robinson with 35 followed by the mercurial Bob Taylor 33, Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 31, Dick Cleland 29, and the Mars Bar went to Trevor Maxted with 21.

The assistant handicapper wasted no time taking a stroke off jack but took pity on Bob Taylor and Dick Cleland who both received an additional stroke.

Andy Phillips in Appalling Conditions

The third qualifying round of the club championships was played on Saturday in cold wet & windy conditions, with the temperature hovering around 8 deg.

With the exception of Andy Phillips, players struggled with hands becoming so cold that gripping the club became almost impossible.

Andy Phillips scored 86 of the stick for a net 69. This shot Andy to the top of the leader board of B Grade qualifiers. Runner up with a net 74 was Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel who beat grandson Kobi on a count back (not a popular result).  Andy Spackman scored net 77 followed by Michael “Tickers” Tickner net 78, Dick Cleland & Keith Roberts from Victor Harbor Golf Club both scored net 79, Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen net 80, the mercurial Bob Taylor net 81, Mark “Mouldy” Millward & David “Jack” Webster net 82, Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke net 84 while Chris “Critta” Waters took the Mars Bar with a net 89.

Sam Cleland, Trevor Maxted & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson failed to complete the round. Sadly this ends their championship campaigns for 2018.

Gus The Good Guy Takes Out Saturday’s Stableford

Russell "Gus The Good Guy" Wenzel off the beaten track
Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel off the beaten track

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel scored 38 stableford points to win today’s competition. Runner up was Chris “Critta” Waters with 36 followed closely by Dick Cleland with 35. The handicapper showed some mercy with Gus and yet deducted a stroke from both Critta & Dick. The scores fell away from there with next best Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke with 32, Andy Phillips 31, Mark “Mouldy” Millward 30 , colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson still struggling to regain form on 28. Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen & Kobi Wenzel both scored 25 but were saved from the Mars Bar by Sean Millward who joined us for the day and managed to snare nearest the pin on hole 4 but not much else.

Jack Webster Unstoppable in the Wind

David "Jack" Webster

Only 3 members were able to interpret  today’s weather map correctly so the remainder missed out on a rain free mulligan competition.

Despite the windy conditions David “Jack” Webster played as if the conditions were calm scoring  very creditable 23 stableford points. Jack was able to capitalise on his opportunities and when his ball struck a tree it finished in the centre of the fairway. Runner up was Dick Secomb who also played masterful golf scoring 20 points, and while Dick avoided the trees he did achieve a spectacular deflection off the 100 metre dropper on hole 6. Dick Cleland was hot on Dick Secomb’s heels with 19, and also playing well he did not handle the trees as well as Jack. In recognition of the excellent scores no Mar Bar was awarded.

Men’s Tuesday Results

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel lead the field with 37 stableford points. Close on his tail was Dick Cleland with 36, but there is some talk that we will see the broomstick putter before long. There was then a big gap to Graham Webster on 31. The rest of the scores belie the benign conditions. The mercurial Bob Taylor & Neil Webster could only manage 27 points while Edie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen took the Mars Bar with 25. After looking a winner with 19 points at the turn the Dutchman could only manage 6 on the homeward 9.
