It is generally said that it is a good thing to get away to a flying start. That is, so long as you do not find yourself in a count back at the end of the day. Andy got away to a flyer scoring 9 points on the first 3 holes but the gloss wore off as the morning wore on. Five points to Dick Secomb on the 6th hole of the day (the 9th) suddenly saw Andy under threat and when finally they both finished with 21 points Dick won the count back easily. The only other player was Dick Cleland who took the Mars Bar with 17.

Tickers Wins on Count Back
Michael “Tickers” Tickner won Saturday’s stableford on a count back from Andy Phillips, both scoring handicap equaling 38 points. Andy was playing immaculate golf on the back 9 but a stumble at the 17th cost him dearly. Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen was only 1 point back on 37 despite complaining incessantly during the round. Of concern is the long tail of players who were unable to score 30 points or more.

Trevor Maxted Wallops Mulligan Field
A small field of 4 played mulligans today as some of our older players attended the Mid North Veterans Golf in Clare.
Trevor Maxted confirmed his reputation as a sprinter, proving too stong over 9 holes. Trevor scored 23 stablleford points to be well clear of the mercurial Bob Taylor who finished with 19. Dick Cleland scored 17 points while Dick Secomb took the Mars Bar with 14. As we were out of Mars Bars Dick received the complete version of the 2019 Rules of Golf. Anyone with queries about the new rules should consult Dick.

Saturday: Dick Secomb Wins But Scores Appalling
Dick Secomb won Saturday’s stableford with a meager score of 33 points. In fact Dick was the only player to score 30 points or more. I am trying to recall a catastrophic weather event on Saturday but the weather was somewhat benign.
The less said about the others the better so here are the full results:
- 33 – Dick Secomb
- 29 – Andy Phillips, Michael “Tickers” Tickner
- 28 – Trevor Maxted
- 25 – Pat Hallion (Mars Bar)
Count Backs Required to Determine First & Last in Mulligans.
Dick Cleland & Bill McMahon both scored 19 points in today’s mulligan competition, with Dick being successful on the count back. Mulligan specialist Dick Secomb finished third with 17 points after scrubbing the last hole & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel scored 16 points. Trevor Maxted & David “Jack” Webster tied for last place with 14 points eack & Jack received the Mars Bar on a count back.
Tuesday: Andy Phillips Dominates Small Field
Only 4 players braved the inclement weather on Tuesday, but the weather had no affect on Andy Phillips who scored a magnificent 40 stableford points. The handicapper had no hesitation in deducting 1 stroke from Andy’s handicap.
The rest of the field were unable to match Andy’s brilliance with runner up Russell “Gud The Good Guy” Wenzel managing just 35 points, while colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson scored just 31 & Mars Bar recipient Michael “Tickers” Tickner scored 30.
Jack Webster Takes Mars Bar
David “Jack” Webster is proving more mercurial than Bob Taylor, oscillating between first and last on a regular basis. Jack managed just 24 stableford points well clear of 2nd last placegetter.
Scores were not brilliant but the steady Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel won with a handicap equaling 38 points. Runner up was Bob Perry who beat colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson on a count back. Both scored 36 points but Bob followed up a front nine of 11 with a back nine of 25. One more hole & Bob would have won.
