For those who celebrate the New Year with moderation, men’s golf will be on as usual for a Tuesday with a 9:00 am for 9:30 am hit off. The weather forecast is for a maximum of 32 deg C with wind from the South to South East, thus promising pleasant conditions for golf.

Seventeen players played in the last competition of the year. Pat Hallion was outstanding scoring 42 stableford points to win by 2 strokes. Runner up was the in-form David “Jack” Webster while the mercurial Bob Taylor was third with 38

The Burra Golf Club held the Thomo Classic 64 Stableford competition to celebrate the 64th birthday of colourful & popular local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson & despite the busy time of year 12 players made a special effort to attend.

Today’s winner was the equally popular Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen whose score of 40 points shows that he is well and truly back to his best form. Runner up was Chris “Critta” Waters with 37.

The smallest player had the biggest score. Kobi Wenzel blitzed a high scoring field scoring 51 stableford points to win on Tuesday. Runner up was Chris “Critta” Waters with 41 points, a good score overshadowed by the winner. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was third with 40 points. All of the scores were not brilliant with Mark “Mouldy” Millward taking the Mars Bar with just 25 points.

Fifteen players turned out for the unique par 3 contest devised by popular Club Captain Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel despite the possible bias in the handicapping system.

It was no surprise that Gus The Good Guy won the competition, although a count back was required to split Gus & Matt McAuley. The unique contest comprises 20 holes therefore with a par of 60. Scores were spread from net 61 by the winners to net 74.
Nearest the pins winners were Kobi Wenzel hole 4, Andy Phillips hole 8 & Dick Cleland hole 11.
A birdie comp was held where every birdie scored won a golf ball. Winners were: Jack Webster, Matt McAuley, Critta Waters (2),Thomo & Andy Phillips.
Michael “Tickers” Tickner mastered the tough blustery conditions to comfortably win today’s mulligan competition with 19 points. The strong winds caused problems for the other competitors with Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel next best with 17.
David “Jack” Webster continues a successful December with another win on Tuesday. Jack scored 38 points sufficient to beat longer handicappers Pat Hallion & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson who tied for second with 37 each. The handicapper took another bite out of Jack’s handicap and he now finds himself on 12 joining the serious golfers. Michael “Tickers” Tickner was disappointing again and we can just hope that this is a hiccup.

Mark “Mouldy” Millward gave notice that his best golf is not behind him, winning Saturday’s stableford comfortably with a score of 40 points. Runner up was Pat Hallion with 37 points. Other scores of note were 36 points from Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen and a disappointing 27 points by the in form Michael “Tickers” Tickner.

Tuesday December 4: Michael “Tickers” Tickner, the form player in the club, bounced back after a disappointing effort on Saturday where he just avoided the Mars Bar, to score 38 stableford points only to be caught by the unpredictable colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson who took out the competition on a count back. David “Jack” Webster, who is also showing consistent improvement was only one back on 37.

Davis “Jack” Webster was the standout on Saturday returning a score of +3 in a par competition for a comfortable win from runners up colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson, Kobi Wenzel & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel who all finished on +1. The most disappointing result was that of Michael “Tickers” Tickner who finished new the bottom of the field despite some recent good form.
