There were no standout scores on Saturday with Andrew “Spacky” Spackman winning comfortably with 36 stableford points. A count back was required to find the runner up with David “Jack” Webster successful over Michael “Tickers” Tickner, both scoring 34. There was then a big gap to Dick Secomb on 30. The rest of the field tailed away with Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 28, colourful local sporting identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson 27 & Kobi Wenzel on 22.

In the Jennison Handicap Match Play matches Andy Phillips was untroubled beating Dick Cleland 4 & 3. The other match scheduled between Spacky & Chris “Critta” Waters did not take place as Critta did not turn up. It is understood the players have arranged an alternative time.

Dick Secomb demonstrated his superiority over his fellow mulligan players yet again but in an even more emphatic manner. Players had to cope with cold & windy conditions which held scores down, that is with the exception of Dick.

Dick got off to a flyer with 8 points after 2 holes & finished almost as well with 9 points on the last 3 holes finishing with 24 points all together. The best the rest could muster was 19 points by Andy Phillips for a distant 2nd. Dick Cleland was 3rd with 18 which included 21 putts. Bob Taylor scored 17 followed by David “Jack” Webster & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson 16, Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 14, Andrew Lenartowicz (Peterborough) 13 & the Mars Bar went to David Norman (Peterborough) 12.

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel sets off in today’s heat

Despite a forecast maximum of 40 degrees, colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson, Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel, David “Jack” Webster, Michael “Tickers” Tickner & Kobi Wenzel set out in the afternoon heat for a stableford round. Four of the five took the precaution of riding in carts with only the hardened Thomo tackling the course on foot. Fortunately the temperature only reached 38 degrees.

Gus The Good Guy blew the field away scoring 42 points while grandson Kobi was runner up with 37. Tickers scored 34 & Jack 33.

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel & playing partner, colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson were locked in a fierce battle in today’s stableford. Gus reached the turn with 20 points to Thomo’s 19. Both lifted on the back 9 and Thomo had victory in site when Gus performed a freak shot on the 17th to hole out from 50 metres robbing Thomo of a well deserved victory. Gus finished with 41 to Thomo’s 40 Thomo’s performance suggests that while he has difficulty defending a lead he is better suited to the chase. Dick Cleland, who is considered the best finisher in the club was the one to fade today after starting with an eagle on the 1st and reaching the turn in 21 he could only manage 17 on the run home to finish 3rd with 38. Klaus Heymann from Tarcowie Golf Club scored 34 followed by David “Jack” Webster & Kobi Wenzel on 33. The Mars Bar went to Trevor Maxted playing his first round in 12 months & scoring a respectable 31.

Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson was off to a cracking start in today’s stableford reaching the turn with 22 points well clear of his rivals. Unfortunately, as is too often the case, Thomo was unable to sustain his form over the back 9 adding only 14 points to his score. Thomo’s playing partner, Andy Phillips reached the  turn in 17 but burst into form on the back 9 with 22 including 10 on the last 3 holes to  claim first prize with 39 points. Runner up was the mercurial Bob Taylor with 37, followed by Chris “Critta” Waters & Thomo on 36 & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on 32. Dick Cleland finished with 29 after managing to accumulate 4 penalty strokes. Dick was penalised 2 strokes on the first hole for  carrying more than 14 clubs. Fortunately this was discovered on that hole thus avoiding a similar penalty on the second hole. On the 12 hole Dick was penalised 1 stroke for causing his ball to move while at rest & another stroke for an unplayable lie. Despite this the Mars Bar went to David “Jack” Webster who had a very ordinary day scoring just 23.

Six players saluted the starter for today’s stableford. Conditions were extremely pleasant in the morning with a gentle South Easterly keeping players comfortable.

Dick Cleland followed up his win on Saturday scoring 45 points to win comfortably.  Runner up was Andy Phillips with 39 points. Only 1 point separated these players after 9 holes but Dick scored 24 points on the back 9 to seal the win. David “Robbie” Robinson & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson both scored 34 points while Chris “Critta” waters scored 32. Nothing much went right for David “Jack” Webster who surrounded the course with lost golf balls. Jack took the Mars Bar with 24 points.

Dick was unlucky for the second round in a row to suffer the displeasure of the handicapper loosing yet another stroke.
