Eleven players played in today’s round of the Chemmart Challenge in high winds. Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen & Dick Cleland handled the conditions best & were locked together on 19 points at the half way mark. On the run home Dick proved the steadier finishing with a total of 37 points to the Dutchman’s 35. Mark “Mouldy” Millward & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson scored 34 followed by Bob Perry & Andy Spackman on 33, and Andy Phillips & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on 32. Chris “Critta’ Waters & Kobi Wenzel could only manage 28 but the Mars Bar went to

The handicapper was busy after today’s round. Dick Cleland was unlucky to lose a stroke but Mouldy, Andy Phillips & Critta all gained a stroke.

The Flying Dutchman Runs Aground

The winning streak of Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen came to an abrupt end on the 8th hole of today’s 9 hole mulligan competition. Five players enjoyed the cooler morning temperatures, & after 7 holes Andy Phillips & Dick Cleland were locked together on 18 points with Eddie & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel poised just 1 back on 17. Surprisingly the only player out of contention was mulligan specialist Dick Secombe on 13.

The Dutchman’s game unraveled on the 8th when he played Gus’s ball by mistake incurring a 2 stroke penalty which resulted in a scrub. Visibly shaken, the Dutchman only managed one point on the 9th (2nd hole) despite 2 strokes handicap on the hole. Andy & Gus held the line scoring 2 points each on the last 2 holes but Dick Cleland showed his class closing with a par on the difficult par 4 to finish with 23. Andy was runner up with 22 followed by Gus with 21. Dick Secombe finished the best with 3 points on each of the last 2 holes to finish with 19 while Eddie finished up with the Mars Bar on 18.

Dick Cleland took the Mars Bar with a dismal 13 points. Scoring only 2 points in the first 4 holes in a 9 hole competition meant Dick was unlikely to feature in the finish.

With the exception of Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen & Neil Webster, the scores in Tuesday’s men’s golf were exceptionally good.

David “Robbie” Robinson lead the charge with 42 stableford points, prompting the handicapper to chop 0.6 off Robbie’s GA handicap thus reducing his playing handicap to 9. Runner up was Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel with 40 points. The handicapper got stuck into Gus as well taking 0.3 off his GA and dropping his playing handicap to 12. David “Jack” Webster was hot on Gus’s heels with 39, followed by the mercurial Bob Taylor 38. Bradtke Stockman showed that he will soon be a force to be reckoned with scoring 36, his best for 18 holes so far. Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson also scored 36, & Andy Phillips scored 35.

Former member & Club Champion Neville “Ned” Kelly returned to the club for a game on Saturday & lived up to his namesake’s reputation as a bushranger.

Runner up was Andy Phillips with a handicap equalling 38 points, ahead of a tightly bunched field consisting of Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 37, Mark “Mouldy” Millward 36, colourful local identity Phillip “Thomo” Thomson 36, Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen 36, Richard Cleland 34, the mercurial Bob Taylor 34, Andrew Rac (Gladstone Golf Club) 33, Michael “Tickers” Tickner 33 & David “Jack” Webster 33.

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was in red hot form for today’s mulligan comp. Gus scored 24 stableford points for the 9 holes to win convincingly. Runner up was Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke with 20 points. The Chook Man was able to play because of a recess in ladies bowls. Dick Cleland, who had a run of 3 putt greens was next with 19. Colourful local identity “Philip “Thomo” Thomson scored 15 while the Mars Bar went to Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen with 9 points. Despite his low score Eddie did not use any mulligans as he was in one of his funny moods.

Many people have wondered why these reports are being posted later than usual. Your correspondent has upgraded from ADSL to NBN (fibre to the node) & it now takes 2 days to do what previously took 20 minutes. In fact as I write this, the Internet is down yet again.

One hour later we are finally online so here goes. Oh no! It has dropped out again!
