Saturday: Second Round of Championship Qualifying

The second round of qualifying took place on Saturday in much better weather than the first round. It is difficult to predict who will qualify at this stage as qualifying is decided by the best two of four rounds. David “Robbie” Robinson has moved into the lead with 172, 2 strokes ahead of Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel. Fans will be delighted to see that colourful local identity Philip “Tommo” Thomson is right up there in third place on 173 and threatening to take out another championship. I would encourage all punters to get their money on Tommo now before the odds get prohibitive. Mark “Mouldy” Millward rounds out the top four for now. It is pretty clear where the change of grades happens this year with Richard “Pickles” Matz well clear of his rivals.

First Qualifying Round of Championships

The first qualifying round for the Club Championships was played on Saturday. In a round that saw some extremely heavy rain early in the second nine, many scores were affected. Former champion, Matt Opperman took the rain in his stride scoring 82 off the stick for a net 73. Philip “Tommo” Thomson was also unaffected scoring 85 off the stick (Tommo is not in the same class as Oppy) to tie Oppy in the handicap event. Ben Dunstan collected the Mars Bar. Trevor Maxted & Dick Cleland abandoned their rounds during the rain to go home for a hot shower and get ready to watch the Port Power beat the Crows. Defending champion David “Jack” Webster did not play.

Derek Fletcher in Maiden Win

Derek Fletcher broke through for his first win on Tuesday much to the joy of his fellow golfers. He needed a count back to achieve this beating Michael Shepley in a low scoring affair, both scoring 33 stableford points. A count back was required at the other end of the field to decide the Mars Bar with Richard “Pickles Matz finally breaking his long run of Mars Bars & David “Jack” Webster collecting the confectionary.

Pickles Avoids Mars Bar at Last!

Popular committeeman Richard “Pickles” Matz finally broke his string of Mars Bars but he needed a count back to do it. Pickles and Big Trev Maxted tied for last with 27 stableford points with Trev taking the confectionary.

The winner of the round was Mark “Mouldy” Millward who bolted in with 39 points 4 points clear of runner up, Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel. A multiplier four ball was also held in conjunction with the stableford between teams of 3 (teammates scores were multiplied together on each hole). An example of fine teamwork saw Graham Webster, Andy Phillips and Dick Cleland take out this prize.

Tuesday: Nine Players Defy Damaging Winds

Despite warnings of damaging winds (or did they forget to check the weather forecast), 9 players turned out for the mid-week stableford competition. As was to be expected scores where poorer than usual. The ever popular Pat Hallion was victorious with 32 points, narrowly defeating the trio of the congenial Andy Phillips, Chris “Critta” Waters & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel by 1 point. The Mars Bar was shared by Richard “Pickles” Matz & Michael Shepley, making it the fourth Mars Bar in a row for Pickles.

Pickles Takes 3rd Mars Bar in a Row

Great concern is being felt for the form of popular committee man, Richard “Pickles” Matz. Pickles has now collected 3 Mars Bars in a row with Saturday’s score particularly concerning. I shouldn’t tell you what it was but if you promise not to tell anyone it was 18.

The scores were generally low which we can attribute to the cold windy weather. The winner was David “Robbie” Robinson with 35 points. Robbie did improve during the round coming home with 19 points. Runner up was Big Trevor Maxted with 33.

Handicapper Pipped Again

We have some pretty slow learners at the Burra Golf Club. Handicapper, Andy Phillips produced another good round of 39 stableford points, only to be beaten by 1 point by Boh Wall. As when this happened recently, the handicapper acted swiftly deducting a stroke from the culprit’s handicap. Richard “Pickles” Matz took the Mars Bar in what has become a worrying trend.

Saturday: The Handicapper Continues His Rampage

Peter Weiss took advantage of the conditions to post a scorching score of 43 stableford points, beating runner up, Philip “Tommo” Thomson by 5 points. The handicapper has apparently been nursing some sort of upset and we hope he soon recovers for the well being of our members. This time he slashed 2 strokes from Peter’s handicap. Richard “Pickles” Matz continued his up & down form to take the Mars Bar on this occasion.
