Ten players braved gale force winds to play today’s stableford event, and the scores reflected the difficulty the conditions caused. Winner was David “jack” Webster who scored a creditable 36. Matt McCauley & Andy Phillips tied for 2nd just 1 back with 35. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on 34 & Chris “Critta” Waters 30, were the only others to score 30 or more. At the head of the rest was David “Robbie” Robinson on 28, followed by Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen 24 & Michael “Tickkers” Tickner 24. As visitor Klaus Heymann could not stay, Mark “Mouldy” Millward took the Mars Bar for the second week in a row with 23. The new handicapper has taken pity on Mouldy and increased his handicap to 10′

Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen appeared to be becalmed in the first 3 holes of today’s mulligans  scoring only 2 points. On the 4th hole he picked up the breeze and began a recovery of Lazarean proportions. Despite his improvement the Dutchman maintained the demeanor of one disappointed  in his standard of play. He scored 19 points in the last 6 holes for a score of 21. By the time his fellow competitors woke up to what was happening it was too late. Dick Cleland finished 2nd with 20, followed by Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke with 17, Andrew Hall with 14 and Dick Secomb collected the Mars Bar with 12 points. Eddie topped the day of by collecting the 2 nearest the pins on offer.

The Burra Golf Club has taken delivery of what we believe to be the first brand new piece of equipment in its 117 year history.

Our photo shows David “Robby” Robinson showing the mower to David “Jack” Webster. The new mower replaces an almost 20 year old mower that was well past its use by date. The mower will be a boon to our small workforce & we look forward to some fine putting surfaces.

Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson made it 2 in a row with another fine round today. A small field of 6 hit off in perfect weather conditions, but what was most surprising was how badly most of Thomo’s co-competitors played. Thomo scored 40 stableford points to win comfortably, but what was most notable was the uncharacteristic strong finish over the last 4 holes with 4 pars for 11 points. Runner up was Dick Cleland with 36 and I am afraid that is where it finished. Andy Phillips, Bob Taylor & Eddie The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen all scored 26 while the Mars Bar went to David “Jack” Webster with 24. Jack spent the whole of the previous day working on the golf course but spent most of today in the trees. Sometimes life just isn’t fair.

After an interminable time colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson has finally broken through for a win in Saturday’s Par event. Thomo scored 3 up to beat Andy Phillips by 2. While both players reversed the trend amongst Burra golfers by scoring better on the back 9, Andy suffered a massive fade over the last 2 holes. After an excellent run of 4 holes won in a row Andy was on the long par 4 16th for 2 & seemed set for a 5th straight plus only to 3  putt for a half. Hed did not recover from this losing the final 2 holes and leaving Thomo clear leader.

Apart from the 2 leaders the rest of the scores were poor to say the least.  Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was next with -3 followed by Chris “Critta” Waters -4, then Dick Cleland & Mark “Mouldy” Millward on -7, with visitor Klaus Heymann bringing up the rear with -10. As Klaus had left before the presentations the Mars Bar was awarded to Mouldy.

The Burra Golf Club continued it successful run of Auctions on Sunday November 6. The Club has now been running these Auctions for 20 years and they are the major fundraiser for the club. We are indebted to the auctioneering services of Connor Lamond and Andrew Butler who have once again given up their time to assist the Golf Club.

The Club would to thank all of the members who gave their time to make the day a success. The key personnel have been doing this for so long that they have become highly efficient. In particular thanks to Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel, David “Robbie” Robinson & Dick Secomb who spent the whole day, organising the auction & recording the sales. No easy task. The ladies in the nerve centre, Di Day, Cheryl Clonan & Sharyn Roberts worked with cool efficiency once again,  recording the sales, producing invoices & collecting money from buyers.

The food & drink stall also made its  contribution to the day’s taking and once again was run by Mark “Mouldy” Millward who was so well organised that it seemed to almost run itself. Once again the Mid North’s 2 top BBQ chefs, Bob Taylor & Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke, were on duty making sure that all patrons were well fed. We would also like to thank Bob Perry for making sure of the comfort of all in attendance.

It took a count back to separate Andy Phillips & Dick Secomb who both scored 20 points. Surprisingly Dick Secomb had only used 2 of the 3 allowed mulligans. When asked why he said he forgot! David “Jack” Webster was right on their tails finishing with 19. The remaining scores were not so bright. Don Lloyd scored 17, Russell “Gus THe Good Guy” Wenzel 16, & Phil Arthur 14 while Andrew Hall & Dick Cleland battled for the Mars Bar. Andrew scored 8 while Dick took the Mars Bar with 7.

Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel scored 38 points to edge out Andy Phillips by one stroke. Gus was rewarded by the new Handicapper with a 1 stroke handicap reduction. There was, however, a 5 stroke gap to Bob Taylor & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson on 32 (Thomo choked again). A closely fought battle for the Mars Bar saw Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen avoid the chocolate with 30 points.The confectionary went to Dick Cleland with 29.

Seven players played on Saturday & at the end of the day 6 points separated first from last.

Jack Webster played steady consistent golf to win with 38 stableford points narrowly beating Matt McAuley on 37. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was third on 36 followed by Dick Secomb & Michael “Tickers” Tickner with 35 each.Mark “Mouldy” Millward scored 33 just avoiding the Mars Bar which was left for colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson with 32, a score which normally would not earn a Mars Bar.

A feature of the play was the fact that Jack was the only player to match his front 9 score on the back. All the other competitors choked on the back 9 in many cases scoring considerably less and blowing a winning lead. The prevalence of choking in the Club is of concern and officials should take steps to address the problem. Your comments will be welcomed.
