Visiting Glenelg junior, Lachlan Murphy, showed Burra men a clean pair of heels on Saturday. Lachie scored +3 in the par event to finish 4 ahead of colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson & Dick Cleland on -1. Dick failed to negotiate the final 3 holes once again leaving Thomo runner up on a countback. Things were pretty grim for the rest of the field, with Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel -4, David “Robbie” Robinson -5, Kobi Wenzel -6, Bob Taylor -7 & Max Wiech -11. The Mars Bar went to Lachie’s father Scott so the Murphys had both ends of the field covered.

Gus The Good Guy Turns it Around

After a round on Tuesday that would have seen lesser men giving the game away, Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel took out Thursday’s 9 hole mulligan competition with 22 points. This compares with Tuesday when he could only muster 24 points in 18 holes. Runner up was David “Robbie” Robinson with 21. Robbie started the day with 3 birdies on the first 3 holes before striking tree trouble on the fourth hole (7th in normal play). Dick Secomb finished with 17 while Andrew Hall & Dick Cleland tied in the fight to avoid the Mars Bar. The confectionery went to Dick on a count back.

Tuesday Men’s Results

David "Robbie" Robinson

Five players ventured out in very cold & windy conditions and returned good scores with one exception.

David “Robbie” Robinson took the honours with 39 points while the genial Andy Phillips was runner up with 37. Chris “Critta” Waters & David “Jack” Webster both scored 35. The “Mars Bar” went to Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel with 24. Gus should have stayed at home by the fire.

Tickers Wins in Tight Finish

Michael "Tickers" Tickner
Michael “Tickers” Tickner

Michael “Tickers” Tickner defeated Matt “Oppy” Opperman on a countback after Dick Cleland choked in spectacular fashion when in an apparently unassailable position scoring just 2 points in the last 3 holes. Tickers & Oppy scored 38 stableford points while Dick scored 37. The rest of the field were not in contention with Andy Phillips on 34, followed by Neil Webster 30, Dick Secomb 26, & Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” on 25. The Mars Bar went to Bill McMahon for the 2nd week in a row with 23 points.

Thomo in Scintillating Form – Bogisch

Colourful local identity Philip "Thomo" Thomson
Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson

Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson exceeded all expectations in defeating Dave “Robbie” Robinson 6 & 5 in their handicap match on Saturday. Thomo played above himself to be just 1 stroke over the card when the match finished. Thomo will proceed to the quarter finals subject a problem with his eligibility being resolved within the coming week.

Chris "Critta" Waters

In other matches Chris “Critta” Waters despatched Gordon “The Chook Man” Kakoschke 6 & 5. There is speculation that the Chook Man may be past his best.

In the only other match played Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel just fell over the line, narrowly beating the mercurial Bob Taylor 1 up.

There are 4 matches still to be played & players are reminded they must be played prior to July 15.

Three Way Tie in Mulligans

David "Jack" Webster
David “Jack” Webster

Five players came out to play in weather equivalent to a good Scottish summers day, 8 degrees C and a fine mist. David “Jack” Webster, Andy Phillips & Bob Taylor all scored 20 points. The arbitrary count back system awarded the day to Jack & 2nd placing to Andy. Dick Cleland scored 17 & the Mars Bar went to Sam Cleland.  Bob won nearest the pin on hole 4 & Jack was on hole 15.

Burra Men Wimp Out in Cold Weather

Dick Cleland
Dick Cleland

Only 5 men turned up today in cold golfing weather. It should be remembered that Burra winters are not as harsh as Scottish summers. With 2 players engaged in A Bogisch Cup match (reported earlier) it left only 3 players to play in the stableford competition. The scores were all respectable with Dick Cleland winning with 38 points from Chris “Critta” Waters 36 & Neil Webster 34. The handicapper has deducted another stroke from Dick’s handicap.

Bogisch Match Play Debacle

Bob Perry & Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen played their first round Bogisch Match Play match today because Bob is unavailable on Saturday. As they both rode in Eddie’s cart they made quick progress around the course and after 5 holes caught up with a group of ladies playing ahead of them. Rather than approach the ladies & politely ask to play through they elected to cut across to the tenth hole & return later to complete the missed holes. Unfortunately this is in breach of rule 2-1 which states that a match “consists of one side playing against another over a stipulated round”. A stipulated round is defined as “playing the holes of the course in their correct sequence” thus our two protagonists have found themselves in breach of rule of rule 1-3 Agreement to Waive Rules, the penalty for breach of this rule in match play- disqualification of both sides.

When advised of the ruling the Dutchman was philosophical (he lost anyway) while it will take more than this to disturb Bob Perry’s equilibrium.

The committee urges all participants to acquaint themselves with rules as they apply to match play before their matches begin.
