Eight players contested Tuesday’s stableford in near perfect conditions. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel took the honours by a narrow margin from Chris “Critta” Waters. Gus scored 40 points to Critta’s 39. Dick Cleland was third with 38 followed by David “Robbie” Robinson 37, colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson 36 & David “Jack” Webster 35. There was a gap to Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen on 32 while the Mars Bar went to Phil Arthur who nonetheless scored 30 points.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment was the extreme attack of choking experienced by Thomo. Thomo reached the turn with a massive 23 points but once again he failed to deliver on the homeward 9, scoring a mere 13. Another less sustained case of choking occurred when Critta had a 6 foot putt (1.8288 meters) for a birdie 3 & 5 points on 16 only to leave it 3 feet (0.9144 meters) short.
Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulan showed great form to win Saturday’s par competition. Eddie said it was so long since he had won that he had forgotten what a prize voucher looked like. So we put our fact checkers to work and it was way back on November 10 this year that Eddie last won.
Eddie scored +3 to win comfortably from Matt McCauley on +1. Dick Cleland was square. From this point the scores began fall away in a geometric progression. Michael “Tickers” Tickner scored -1 followed by Andy Phillips & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on -2, then Mark “Mouldy” Millward with a very disappointing -7 only saved from the Mars Bar by Dick Secomb with an even more disappointing -9.
Andy Phillips adopted extreme measures to try to combat the bush flies that have become a bit of a nuisance. Unfortunately this did not transfer to the score card.
Eight Players faced the starter for Thursday’s social 9 hole mulligan comp. Scores were generally good with a three way tie for first place, with David “Jack” Webster, David “Robbie” Robinson & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel all finishing with 20 points. The count back favoured Jack who started very slowly before scoring 16 pts on the last 6 holes. Robbie was runner up & Gus missed out. Interestingly Jack & Gus used all 3 mulligans allowed while Robbie did not use any suggesting he did not hit any bad shots.
The rest of the field were close behind with Andy Phillips on 19, Don Loyd 18, Dick Secomb 17 & Bob Taylor 16. The Mars Bar was given to Andrew Hall on 11.
Five players ventured out in warm sunny conditions with a light breeze for what proved to be an enjoyable round of golf. Both Bob Taylor & Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen started well with the Dutchman scoring 22 points on the front 9 to Bob’s 21. Bob faltered on the back 9 failing to score on holes 12 & 13 but then he resumed as though nothing had happened finishing with 39 points. The Dutchman’s round started to unravel around the 14th hole & never quite recovered & he finished with 37 points. Dick Cleland finished 3rd with 36 followed by a disappointing colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson on 35. Graham Webster received the Mars Bar with a relatively high score of 31.

The rescheduled Burra Hotels Ambrose was held on Sunday in warm sunny conditions with just a slight breeze, ideal for golf.

A field of 48 players in 12 teams contested the event and enjoyed the conditions greatly enhanced by the provision of refreshment & steak & sausage sandwiches at Dick Secomb’s tent erected near the 5th & 11th tees.
The champion team are all smiles with their trophies.
The winners of the championship (best gross score) the Kapunda #1 team of D Carson, W Strangward, B Pearce & J Lindablab, who carded a score of 61.

In the handicap section the Chairman’s team, made up of Burra trio Dick Cleland, Bob Perry, & Eddie “The Flying Dutchman Van Keulen plus Klaus Heymann of Peterborough scored a stunning victory with a net 54.875, 3.25 strokes clear of the runner up.
Particularly disappointing was the performance of the Burra #3 team which featured Summer specialist Philip “Thomo” Thomson and Shawn “Sheep” Rayson. They finished well out the running for any prizes except the encouragement award (Mars Bar) which they avoided by 0.625 of a stroke. This award went to the Peterborough #2 team of A O’Dea, A Borowiche, A Ranarwitz & G Kennewell.

Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson & noted Summertime golfer won yesterday’s stableford on a count back from Michael “Tickers” Tickner. Both scored excellent scores of 41 points with Michael scoring consistent nines of 20 & 21 while Thomo started with an ordinary 17 points but stormed home with 24. It would seem that the current count back system favours the less consistent golfer. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was third with a solid 38 points. Others were David “Jack” Webster 35, Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen 33 & Dick Cleland 31. The Mars Bar was a no contest with Mark “Mouldy” Millward the recipient with a very sad 23 points.

Bob Taylor got away to a good start, playing well through 7 holes before slowing to a walk on the final 2 holes with just one point on each. Dick Secomb, on th other hand got a very modest start before coming home in a rush scoring 11 points over the last 4 holes. Bob finished with 20 points to Dick’s 19. Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen & Dick Cleland tied for the Mars Bar with 15. The Dutchman’s game was up & down while Dick played well through 5 holes before his putter went cold. Dick got the Mars Bar on a count back.

Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson recovered from his disappointment on Saturday to post a winning 37 stableford points. Bob Taylor was 2nd with 33 while David “Jack” Webster had a let down after his fine round on Saturday with 32. Chris “Critta” Waters took the Mars Bar with 30. The handicapper has given Critta an extra stroke.
David “Jack” Webster stole the limelight with a runaway win in Saturday’s stroke competition. Jack scored an excellent score of net 66 (86 gross) to win by six strokes. On the other hand colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson, usually noted for his summer form collected the Mars Bar with a net 83. Scores in between were runner up Matt McCauley net 72, Bill McMahon nnet 75, Dick Cleland & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel net 77, Michael “Tickers” Tickner net 78 & David”Robbie” Robinson net 80.
The handicapper acted quickly to take a stoke off Jack and gave one to Gus The Good Guy.
At the end of Winter 2015, colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson was on a handicap of 15 marginally better than the average for Australian male golfers. During the Summer of 2015/2016 with hard fairways with plenty of run Thomo reduced his handicap to 10. By the end of Winter 2016 Thomo was back on 15. Now that Summer has finally arrived and the fairways have hardened up we see Thomo returning to the winners circle. He has already reduced his handicap to 14 & now is well on his way to further reducing it.
Tuesday saw the best weather for golf in a decade & yet only 4 players turned up. Monday night saw a meeting of the Burra Malt Whisky Tasting Group which could account for 1 or 2. Thomo won with a score of 40 stableford points which would have beaten much larger fields. Runner up was Andy Phillips four points back on 36. Brett Wallis made a rare appearance to score 30, while Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen took the Mars Bar with 26.
