Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson scored an impressive 44 points to win yesterday’s Chemmart Stableford Challenge Round 6. Thomo’s score was due entirely to an excellent even par front 9 of 25 points. Thomo appears to have placed unnecessary pressure on himself on the back 9 with delusions of a course record. Andy Phillips was runner up with a solid 40 points with an 18/22 split for a strong back 9 taking 3 points from Thomo’s early lead. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was third but after a good start like Thomo he faded on the back 9 scoring 37 (20/17). Michael Tickner scored 35 (18/17) followed by Eddie “The Flying Dutchman with 33 (16/17) & David “Robbie” Robinson 32 (15/17). Kobi Wenzel posted an improved 28 points with a very strong back 9 of 17. The Mars Bar went to Dick Cleland who also managed 2 nearest the pins. Dick blamed his score of 26 (13/13) on bad patting. Putting is Golf! So bad putting is bad golf. It’s about time this was pointed out to Dick

Jack Webster takes Australia Day Classic as The Flying Dutchman Blows Commanding Lead

Jack Webster
Jack Webster

Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen stormed to an early lead with 24 points on the front 9 with David “Jack” Webster was hot on the Dutchman’s heals with 22. Jack continued his strong form on the homeward 9 with a solid 20 points for a total of 42. This is a culmination of improved form by Jack over the past few rounds. The Dutchman faltered on the back 9 for another 16 points and a total of 40. The damage to the Dutchman’s score occurred between the 10th & 14th before he recovered over the last 4 holes. This would suggest that fitness is lacking in the mental rather than physical department. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel was third with a solid 19/20 39 points, while colourful local identity, Philip “Thomo” Thomson scored 38. Once again Thomo showed the benefit of improved fitness with a 18/20 split. There was a big gap to Mark “Mouldy” Millward on 34. This was promising, however, in that Mouldy seems to be emerging from a period of dismal form at long last. Dick Secomb scored 33 followed by David “Robbie” Robinson & the mercurial Bob Taylor locked on 32.

The rest of the field fared poorly all failing to score 30 points. Andy Phillips could only manage a 14/14 28 points while Chris “Critta” Waters had a 14/13 27. Kobi Wenzel scored an improved 25 points with a 14/11 split suggesting a fade in concentration on the back 9. Denis Little was welcomed back to the club with the Mars Bar. Denis’ score on the homeward 9 (which has been withheld from publication) suggests a lack of match fitness.

The handicapper has been busy taking a stroke off both Jack & The Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman has now lost 3 strokes since January 14. On the other side of the ledger it is sad to see that both Thomo & Critta have drifted out a stroke.

Bob Taylor Strikes Form

The mercurial Bob Taylor put on a sparkling performance to win Tuesday’s stableford. Bob started steadily with 18 points on the front 9 before charging home with 23 on the back 9 for a resounding 41. David “Jack” Webster was runner up with a solid 39 just ahead of Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on 38. Handicapper Andy Phillips was next with 36 followed by a disconsolate Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen 32 & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson 31. Dick Cleland failed to make 30 finishing with 29 while Peterborough visitor Andrew Lenartowicz scored 26. Young Kobi Wenzel took the Mars Bar with 16.

THOMO TRIUMPHS

Philip "Thomo" Thomson
Philip “Thomo” Thomson

Philip “Thomo” Thomson has shown that his new fitness regime is paying dividends. Today he matched his solid 19 points on the front 9 with 19 on the back for a winning score of 38. Runner up was the much improved Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen with 37. It would seem that a bit of fine tuning on the short game will see The Flying Dutchman back to form of a couple of years ago. Luke Spackman scored 36 followed by Mark “Mouldy” Millward 35, & Chris “Critta” Waters on 34. Dick Cleland, Michael “Tickers” Tickner & David “Jack” Webster all had 32, while Andy Spackman & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel scored 31. Klaus Heymann from Tarcowie Golf Club scored 28. The Mars Bar went to Kobi Wenzel who had a bad day scoring 14. Fortunately Kobi is very fond of Mars Bars.

In the absence of the handicapper, the assistant handicapper did the honours. While Thomo & The Flying Dutchman lost a few points of their GA Handicap, the only change to playing handicaps was the popular Club Chairman Dick Cleland who regained the stroke recently taken from him by the handicapper.

Small Mulligan Field

Despite high temperatures forecast for this afternoon the Easterly breeze caressed the Burra Golf Course with its cooling touch this morning providing idyllic conditions for the three players that turned out for a game. Three of our fancied players (at least they fancy themselves), colourful local identity Philip “Thomo”  Thomson, Andy Phillips & Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel were otherwise engaged with Mid North Vets at Pt Hughes. Other members are encouraged to download the Bureau of Meteorology app to their phones so that they can see the hour by hour forecasts and take advantage of the cool mornings with which Burra is blessed.

The standard of golf was  high despite the small field with Dick Cleland successful for the 2nd week in a row with 20 points. Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen was competitive yet again finishing runner up with 18 while Bob Taylor scored 17. There was no 2nd prize or Mars Bar awarded because of the small field.

The Flying Dutchman Turns on the Heat

Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen produced some hot golf to match the scorching conditions on Tuesday to top the small field of 6 players with 37 points. This is the 2nd consecutive competition that the Dutchman has won & once again the handicapper took a stroke from his handicap. Runner up was Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 2 back on 35. Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson & David “Jack” Webster were 3 further back on 32 while Andy Phillips could only manage 28. Young Kobi Wenzel took the Mars Bar with 26 but his scores are continuing to improve. It will not be long before he is giving the leaders a shake up.

Eddie "The Flying Dutchman" Van Keulen
Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen

Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen played his best round for some time to win today’s stableford by 5 strokes with a magnificent 44 points. Dick Cleland continued to improve finishing 2nd with a creditable 39. The handicapper acted swiftly deducting a stroke from both players handicaps. Colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson was third with 38. Thomo appears to have been working on his fitness as his homeward 9 was better than his outward 9 fo a change. The handicapper also took a stroke off Thomo. Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel finished with 36, followed by Bob Perry & Dick Secomb on 34. Mark “Mouldy” Millward & David “Robbie” Robinson finished with 32 while Peterborough member Geoff Ashby was the only other player over 30.

Of the rest Michael “Tickers” Tickner scored 29, Andy Phillips 28 & Tarcowie visitor Klaus Heymann 27.

Young Kobi Wenzel continues to improve with 25 points.

The handicapper did show some mercy giving an extra stroke to Robbie, Dick Secomb & Michael Tickner.

Dick Cleland Wins Mulligans

Only 3 players turned out for Thursday’s mulligan contest, probably because of the high temperatures forecast. High brisk Easterly breeze prevailed throughout the morning kept conditions comfortable for the players. The Easterly in Burra feeds off the Southern Ocean bringing cool relief in the Summer. It was much warmer after lunch when the Easterly dropped.

Dick Cleland
Dick Cleland

Dick Cleland reversed his recent poor form, thanks to an email tip received that morning from Brayden Wauchope Golf. Dick scored 21 points for a comfortable win. Runner up was David “Robbie” Robinson with 17 while Bob Taylor scored 15. Because of the small field there was no runner-up prize & no Mars Bar.

Consistency Pays Off

Russell "Gus The Good Guy" Wenzel

Tuesday’s stableford saw the consistent players succeed over the show ponies. After 9 holes Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen led with 23 points followed by Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel on 21, colourful local identity Philip “Tomo” Thomson on 20, Bob Taylor on 18 & Dick Cleland tailed off on 12.

Gus The Good Guy continued his good form scoring 19 on the homeward nine for a winning score of 40 points. Bob Taylor scored 20 on the back nine for 38 to finish 2nd.The Flying Dutchman only managed 12 points on the back nine to finish with 35. Once again Thomo failed to finish off, scoring a disappointing 14 homeward for 34. If anyone knows of a good personal trainer I am sure Thomo would be pleased to hear from them as his fitness requires some work. Although he scored 18 on the back nine for a total of 30, Dick Cleland took the Mars Bar having given the others too much start at the turn.
