The first round of the Jennison Summer Match Play Cup were held on Saturday with several upsets. Dick Cleland jumped the more favoured Eddie “The Flying Dutchman” Van Keulen to establish a commanding early lead. The Dutchman never recovered & Dick closed out the match 6/5.
David “Robbie” Robinson & colourful local identity Philip “Thomo” Thomson had a great battle making the turn all square Thomo pulled ahead on the homeward 9 to win narrowly 2/1.
Club Champion Michael “Tickers” Tickner saw a potential match winning lead of 2 up with 4 to play dissolve before his eyes losing all four remaining holes to lose 2 down to Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel. Much has been written about the need to be physically fit to be able to play out 18 holes.
Mark “Mouldy” Millward & David “Jack” Webster both received byes in the first round & took the opportunity to play their quarter final. Mouldy would have been better off spending the time working on his game & his fitness. Mouldy was 4 up after 9 only to see Jack level the score after 16, before finally delivering the fatal blow on the 20th.
Three players not playing matches played a stableford competition with Andy Phillips once again showing his good form & fitness posting 20 points on each 9 for a comfortable win over Matt McCauley on 36. Matt matched it with Andy for 9 holes but faded on the back 9. The Mars Bar went to Chris “Critta’ Waters with 32 points.
