Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel became only the second player in history to ace the deceptively difficult 11th hole at Burra on Saturday. While no stranger to holes-in-one most of Gus’s previous successes have occurred on the short par 8th, a hole some consider better suited to a par 3 course.
Gus played a perfectly measured shot with a hybrid that landed short of the green and released to run all of the way into the hole.
Congratulations on a fine shot that highlighted an otherwise uneventful round of golf.
The semi finals of the Bogisch Handicap Matchplay Cup were played in perfect weather.
Results were:
David “Jack” Webster defeated Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel 4 & 3
Kobi Wenzel defeated Boh Wall 3 & 2.
Those not playing matches contested a par bisque competition. This novel version of the par competition enables players to use their handicap strokes however they please introducing an element of strategy and intelligence into the mix. This enabled Dick Cleland, despite a very disappointing game of golf, manipulate his handicaap with such skill that he was a narrow winner beating Trevor Maxted on a count back. At the other end of the spectrum Philip “Tommo” Thomson, despite a reasonable game of golf, took the Mars Bar.
Sharyn Roberts defeated Andrea Rowe 5&4 to win her 15th consecutive title. Sharyn set up a match winning lead in the morning round and while Andrea held Shaz for most of the afternoon she could not make up the difference.
In the men’s club championship Boh Wall defeated Matt Opperman 3&2 in a hard fought tussle. Scores were level at lunch and Boh established a narrow lead in the afternoon before edging Matt out.
In the men’s B Grade Kobi Wenzel defeated Richard “Pickles” Matz and in C Grade Ben Dunstan defeating Michael Shepley. Both winners held leads of 2 up at lunch but the margins blew out to 7&6 in both matches, with fitness or lack thereof playing a part in the final score.

Burra Golf Club reopens with the following restriction Although we are able to open, we will be under some very strict restrictions, so that we can come out the other side of this lockdown stronger. Please take the time to read the below requirements as we all must do our part to keep our golfing community safe.
Clubhouse Requirements: ●Masks are mandatory upon entry to the clubhouse , this includes bathroom facilities. Understand that this is a requirement by law, if a committee member asks you to put on your mask please do so immediately. Hand hygiene important please use the sanitiser provided. ●Our density capacity is dramatically reduced, at 1 person per 4 square metres. This allows for a maximum of, 22 people in the club house and 11 people under the veranda. Please keep this at the forefront of your mind when attending the golf course. ●Food and Beverage can be consumed either inside or outside, however you must be seated. As our liquor license encompasses the entire golf course and clubhouse, this means you cannot consume any food or beverage whilst standing up playing on the golf course.
Golf Course Requirements: ●Golf can resume on Wednesday morning, although it will be for recreational purposes only. Competition golf cannot resume at this stage. ●Golf carts can still be shared, however it is a requirement from Burra Golf Course that only the one person drives, as physical distancing is not possible, we ask that anyone sharing a cart wears a mask at all times. ●Flag poles are to remain in at all times and no handshaking. ●social golf will be held on our usual golf days Club championships will be held on the 15th of August as long as we can resume golf by the 7th August
I ask that all members and visitors remain understanding of these restrictions and continue to do their part to keep our community safe. It is still a requirement of the SA Government that you either QR code check-in or use the Contact Tracing Register which are either in the clubhouse area.
Covid-19 measures introduced by the SA Government have meant that the golf course is currently closed.
The health of all members and visitors are of prime concern and the committee has acted quickly following the latest government announcements and advice from Golf Australia.
We will open the course again once it is deemed safe to do so. In the meantime, please keep safe.
Colourful local identity Philip “Tommo” Thomson told reporters that Boh Wall was the man to beat after Boh bundled him out of the Club Championship in the quarter finals 5&4. “I played well but this guy is too good” Tommo said.
In other matches Mark Millward saw Pat Hallion off with a comfortable 4&3 win, Matt Opperman had to work harder to beat David “Robbie” Robinson 2&1 and Russell “Gus The Good Guy” Wenzel had to go the 19th hole to beat defending champion, David “Jack” Webster.
Boh Wall, Tommo’s choice to win the club championship.
